Britney Dent: The Overcomer’s Story
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. I John 4:4
Britney Dent is our featured Mom for Motherhood Mondays. Britney is married to her husband Maurice and they have spent the past 11 years building a life together along with their three children. Their marriage is something that Britney enjoys. “It is great!!”, she says. She and Maurice married as young adults when they were both in their early 20’s. “He’s my best friend.”, Britney states with enthusiasm. Her husband’s personality is calm and reassuring and complements Britney who manages her family’s busy schedule with thoughtful strictness.
Her Superpower
Like many Moms, Britney is a woman with superpowers. “What is her superpower?”, you ask. Britney is an overcomer. As an overcomer, Britney has been challenged by many things that could have overtaken her and would have overtaken her life. Her health, her finances, her family and her faith have all been threatened with one obstacle or another throughout her life. Overcoming these unwelcomed threats, however, have put Britney in the perfect place to teach, encourage and coach others to become overcomers too.
Health
An overcomer like Britney has had to learn to deal with a variety of trials in her life. She was a premature baby and the oldest child of her parents two children. By the time she was a teenager, she was diagnosed with High Blood Pressure. But in true superhuman fashion, Britney has ditched her medications and replaced it with regular fitness training, and mindfulness practices. Her challenges have not put a damper on her outlook as she continues to be very optimistic about her future and well-being.
Finance
Selma, NC is where Britney is from and growing up in small town USA often meant Britney dealt with being the only black amongst her peers. Resources and opportunities were sparse and yet, she was not satisfied to go without. Education was important to Britney and she grew to be a very determined person. Instead of sitting back and waiting for resources to materialize before her, she met the obstacles head on. For instance, her desire to learn financial management meant that she had to follow her own initiative, conduct her own research, find what she needed and learn independently.
Faith
Britney grew up in church feasting on the word of God. In spiritual terms, she learned scripture and absorbed it like a world-champion athlete training for the Olympics. Her meal of champions was the old and new testament. Need to know the book of James? Ask Britney. She memorized the entire book. But beyond rote memory, Britney learned to surrender to herself, her problems, her ups and her downs to the Lord. “You get to a point where you don’t have any other choice”, Britney offers. It is in those times that those scriptures became real for her and get her through some difficult and trying moments.
Leadership
In 2020, Britney became an author with the publication of her first book, Parenting Re-Defined: Finding the Confidence to Parent Your Teen. Britney became a Life Coach in 2017 and, since then, has worked to coach parents and their teens into a more perfect union. Many people agree that the teenage years is a difficult time and perceive teens in a negative light. Not Britney. “I find that age interesting” she says. She advises parents who are overwhelmed by the unique challenges of teens not to give up. Instead, call Britney and she will share her family success strategies.
With so many accomplishments under her belt, is there any other goals Britney wants to reach? Actually, yes. She wants to publish more books. In addition, she began her work toward her Master degree a few years ago and has not completed her classes yet. So, completing that degree is a priority. But in the interim, she is content with the Lord’s guidance and His timing too. With His help she will reach those goals and more because greater is He living in her than he that is in the world. Amen!
